Great article, Benny! It's true that all our pieces usually have a big recency effect where they get attention the first couple days and then fizzle out, well, besides the big exceptions that have random spikes.
I actually have been writing more than ever and I love my experience on Medium more than ever. I've put a much lower focus on promoting my work where I used to try to boost stats and get people to read. Now, it's a lot more laissez faire on the promotion side -- if people read it, they read it. If they don't, they don't.
I also have simply been trying to not focus on as much of the stuff outside my control as possible. Granted I'm very lucky with about 80% curation, curation is something very much outside my control and I like not to fixate on it. Stats too. I still check too often, but the joy of Medium and in the Medium process for me is WRITING. That has been put first and foremost to me to great effect.
It's not that I don't care if people read my work, because obviously I do, but the best way to get more exposure and just to have fun is to WRITE. It passes the time very fast for me and always has. I've written about topics that I never would have dreamed of before. Sure, it might be unsustainable quantity, but it's not about quantity but more so just a singular focus on the writing. I've gone astray the past couple days and just checked my stats too much. I'm going to try not to do that at all.
Anyways, thanks for the article, Benny, and sorry for the rant!
