I have never played Dota but I am aware of the racism and homophobia in the gaming community with words people would never say in real life, just emboldened by the anonymity. It's tough to describe why it happens and there's this kind of free speech, anti-SJW vibe in the gaming world's culture that I believe will prevent any substantive change in the gaming world, and to Chris's point.
