I’m Shocked I Tested Negative For COVID After So Much Exposure
Teaching at a school with a little under 800 staff and students, I have heard stories of co-workers testing positive for COVID-19, and it isn’t a slight number. It is significant, and every day, more and more people are dropping like flies. Even more surprising is the fact that most of the people I hear about testing positive are fully vaccinated and sometimes even boosted, but the infectiousness of the Omicron variant takes no prisoners.
So you can say the new variant is hitting incredibly close to home. I’ve seen several schools in my district close down due to COVID outbreaks. Depending on the spread of the Omicron variant and knowing so many unvaccinated people and students in my school district, there’s a strong chance we might go virtual at the beginning of 2022. My district has already extended winter break two days to allow additional time for testing.
I held off on judgment for people I know who are unvaccinated, especially a predominantly Black city and school district living with valid mistrust of American health care institutions amidst historical mistreatment of Black Americans.
