Incredible piece. I can’t believe Stockdale went as far as to cut his wrists. I don’t know what I would have done in the same situation but this is an incredible story and I never knew.

I don’t know what the atmosphere was like in Vietnam and the PR at home by the time he was captured, but I know a couple Vietnam War vets from high school and the local VAs home that talked about how when they came home, they weren’t met with kind reception at all. Protestors spew angry words like “baby killers” at them from the airport. One vet told me that the first thing he did when he got home was change in the bathroom.

I wonder what the legacy is now, but Vietnam was such a terrible war for America and soldiers were just doing what they were told.
