Nancy Pelosi has been around so long as a force and leader within the Democratic Party that we often take her rise for granted. Pelosi is now in her fourth term as Speaker of the House of Representatives. I have only known Pelosi throughout my lifetime as Speaker and most powerful Democrat in Congress, and I have also only known her as a Californian.

For a very long, Pelosi has been a boogeyman for attacks from the right, as well as more recently from the more progressive left. The worst of those leftist critiques probably establish Pelosi as a white woman Karens-plaining over her women colleagues of color (name “The Squad”)

To the right, Pelosi is often a straw man for fears of radical socialism and Marxism. To the left, Pelosi is often the epitome of the neoliberal, establishment status quo.

Love her or hate her, Pelosi is very good at what she does (despite being a Democrat, I’ll say the same about Mitch McConnell as well). She knows how to keep her caucus in line and the fact that she has become so powerful as a woman in Congress has been inspiring to many.
