Thank you, Greg. I really appreciate the comment and your reading, and you’re right. Thanks for the insights on it — as Mansa noted, I think the public has always made out the military to be pretty politicized and an entity that it’s not, rather than just any government institution. I’m supportive of my students’ aspirations.

I think it’s also important to note that my parents grew up in Maoist China, so they had a perception that the American military was just like the Chinese one. I don’t know what lived experiences are like as an infantry soldier in either, but I can imagine with some of the stories my grandfather had, combined with the drastic changes in his personality when he came back, a part of my mother didn’t want my brother turning into her father. Never imagined that before.
