Thanks for the comment! I don’t know if it outwardly manifests itself in performance and hard work (plenty of people/kids don’t listen to their parents). It’s just a message that can sometimes get internalized. As an educator as well (not with as much experience!) parental support + accountability has such a huge effect, and this piece just ties in my personal experience and how that kind of messaging goes too far. Plenty of my white friends work very hard and inspire me every day — I’m not saying they don’t. I’m just saying there’s a lot of insecurity behind my immigrant father’s messaging that you always have to be one step up.
